guest commentary by David Potts

I know, you think I am full of it. You aren’t for a tax increase and never will be. Our government gets too much of your money as it is and they spend much of it foolishly. But when it comes to a tax increase, could you be wrong?

In June 2009, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) published The Long-Term Budget Outlook. The first paragraph in the summary section of this report says,

“Under current law, the federal budget is on an unsustainable path — meaning the federal debt will continue to grow much faster than the economy over the long run. Although great uncertainty surrounds long-term fiscal projections, rising costs for health care and the aging of the U.S. population will cause federal spending to increase rapidly under any plausible scenario for current law. Unless revenues increase just as rapidly, the rise in spending will produce growing budget deficits and accumulating debt. Keeping deficits and debt from reaching levels that would cause substantial harm to the economy would require increasing revenues significantly as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), decreasing projected spending sharply, or some combination of the two.”

What does this mean in practical terms? The last paragraph of the summary section the report spells out the consequences of large budget deficits.

“…Large budget deficits would reduce national savings, leading to more borrowing from abroad and less domestic investments, which in turn would depress income growth in the United States. Over time, the accumulation of debt would seriously harm the economy. Alternatively, if spending grew as projected and taxes were raised in tandem, tax rates would have to reach levels never seen in the United States. High tax rates would slow the growth of the economy, making the spending burden harder to bear.”

Let me take a moment to summarize our circumstances in words I can understand. The Federal budget year ended Sept. 30. The Federal budget deficit for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2009 is estimated to total $1.4 trillion dollars, a $950 billion increase over the previous year. A $1.4 trillion budget deficit is not good. Humongous budget deficits lead to a humongous accumulation of debt.

Debt costs money, i.e., interest expense. Although the country can survive without being debt free, humongous debt is a drain on future income limiting what you can buy in the future.

The easiest way to visualize the affect of huge debt is visualizing your own household finances. If you’re up to your neck in debt, you have to keep working hard to earn the income to pay the debt back, with interest. You might even need a second job. While you owe this debt, you can’t buy everything you want and maybe things you really need. Debt carries the obligation to pay the debtor on a regular basis. You have to pay the debt back with money you earn in the future. You’ve already spent part of your future.

I realize that if you are older than 10, this is all basic stuff and even reads like grade school material. But sometimes we need to bring things down to a basic level. There are only two ways to reduce a budget deficit and pay back debt: decrease spending or increase taxes. Our budget deficits are so humongous that we need to do both. If you were in this circumstance with your personal finances, you would do both. You wouldn’t like it, but you would do it.

According to the CBO report, the average historical ratio of debt to GDP is 36%. This ratio is forecast to be 60% at the end of 2010. The quicker we do something to reduce the trend of humongous deficits and large debt, the more prosperous our country will be in the future. Everybody already talks about the need for the government to control spending. But we need a tax increase along with controlled spending.

But here’s the problem. We have a bunch of spendthrifts in Congress. We have established in a previous commentary that as a group, Congress operates at a lower level of ethics than its citizenry. If they can figure a way to direct the money to the interests that have bought them, they will. (Why is it that most members of Congress leave Congress significantly wealthier than when they entered?) So isn’t agreeing to a tax increase throwing our money away? And who are we going to tax? Businesses? Individuals? Only those that make over $250,000?

I propose a surtax that is temporary. The surtax would be temporary because it would be tied to the ratio of U.S. debt to GDP. When our debt exceeded a certain level, maybe when the ratio of debt to GDP exceeded 40%, the surtax would be levied until debt fell below the 40% benchmark.

I propose the surtax be assessed against everybody including those below the poverty line, those receiving welfare and other entitlements. Everybody can survive a small surtax, a surtax of 3% for instance. We need to be united in fighting our excessive debt as if it was a war. United means everybody needs to participate. If everybody had to pay the tax, everybody could share in the aggravation and maybe we would hold our Presidents and Congress accountable for their decisions. Hit everybody’s pocket book at once and see if Congress doesn’t feel the pressure to do right. Rather than making decisions based on party positions and political games, our government should find the best solutions. Wars cost a lot of money. Bailouts cost a lot of money. Paying off political debts cost a lot of money. Your money, not theirs.

But it’s our own fault. Any government governs only by the consent of the people. Think the Soviet Union in the 1980s. We continue to vote for the most fluent candidate, the best looking candidate and the candidate with the most money. We are too busy to learn anything about an issue except for what we hear in sound bites or our favorite talk radio or television shows.

The United States is our country. I love my country. It’s still the best country in the world. We need to defend it against all threats. Excessive debt is a threat to our future prosperity. Read the CBO’s Long-term Budget Outlook. It explains the threat with supporting figures.

If you found your household in excessive debt, and if you wanted to return to a position of financial strength, you would reduce your spending and find extra ways to make money to reduce your debt. The United States is your household, our household. Paying additional taxes to reduce or prevent the country’s excessive debt is not evil. It’s just not a pleasant thing to do. But it could help ensure a more prosperous future.

Rush has my ears

I don't care how much Rush makes. I like him. He's factual AND he is witty and sarcastic. I really enjoy him to the sheetrock media clowns like Charlie Gibson or Chris Wallace. And if he makes $ off of me as a listener (though I don't recall every writing him a check), then so be it. I'd rather it go to him than to nitwits like Michael Moore or Kanye West.

Rush has my ears and anything else

I listen to Rush everyday he is so factural. He is the only one of those news guys that make laugh and sometimes
cry. I depend on him for so much and he makes a lot money
too. He's my puppy doll, I would love to meet him sometime
in person.

Corporate Greed?

Bill Gates employs over 90,000 people and gives away over $20 Billion... and he's greedy?

Who knows how many people Warren Buffet employs and he gives away over $35 Billion... and he's greedy?

Some corporate greed does exist, but it's not the monster you make it out to be!

Corporate greed not the monster it is made out to be??

How can you trivialize the injustices caused by corporations. It is monstrous if you are on the short end of the stick. Employing many people and donating money can be self serving and necessary to maintaining your profitable production and corporate image. How many people have their business ventures put out of work and out of business?? How many philanthropic foundations are jus a front for a tax deduction? Don't be naive, more than SOME greed exists. Greed is predominant. Just wait until you lose your source of income due to corporate shenanigans although I hope that does not happen to you. Again, ask any Enron victim for your reality check.

Corporations are GOOD for you!

How can you trivialize the contributions of corporations toward the standard of living we enjoy here in America? Corporations employ millions of people. That is good. Corporations provide technological advances. That is good. Corporations develop new medicines. That is good. You could not function without corporations.

The ultimate goal of any business is to provide a service/product to the public in return for a profit. That is why people start a business in the first place. Businesses/corporations take financial risks everyday and the reward for that risk is profit.

For every example of corporate greed you have, there are probably 100 examples of good corporations. Don't hate the rich for amassing wealth, unless you hate the poor for squandering it.

Haves vs. Have nots

I have often wondered if perhaps the vehement vitriole released upon the poor and powerless by those in the middle(that's right, the middle not the top")socio-economic levels of our society is simply a manifestation of "pecking order" induced by fear of falling down that socio-economic ladder. The higher-ups are relatively untouchable. So rather than face them on the issues of a higher standard of living for all of us by sharing their wealth through societal norms, the poor and relatively defenseless are dumped-on instead.

That is "bullying", plain and simple. So pick on someone your own size or bigger. Then you can claim to work hard and fight honestly for a better world for yourself and your neighbor.

Corporations financial risk.........

I don't know about "risk" takers in corporations. Maybe when they are small upstarts they have no choice but to take risks. Once established however, they buy and lobby for a sure bet. The corporate banks are not lending enough to stop the bleeding of the real estate market nationwide. If they were then sales, values and homelessness would be improved. Instead the "bail-out" money pathetically and greedily acquired by Mr Paulson while taking the next exit is being hoarded to improve the balance sheets used to lie about the investment quality of the stock held by these robber barons of new....and it worked for the moment, the market is up.....analysts say don't get too excited as there are still many bad loans on the books.....Maybe if the bailout money helped to refinance rather than forclose and sell-short the "market" would stabilize.

Corporations are good for us?????

What rock did you just crawl from under? No question, the industrial revolution and all that has happened since then has completely changed our standard of living and all that is involved. Probably in many cases, not for the best.

This has been one of the better exchanges on CW until you came along. Some excellent points on both sides were being rationally presented for a change. Pretty general agreement that greed is corrupting and destructive and must be controlled.

Don't forget that Moses broke the tablets when he came down and found all the "golden" worship! What did Jesus do in Jerusalem not long before he was crucified. Those are Christian stories. And that business/corporations have grown too large, with too much money and political influence in a democratic system such as ours.

And much of today's wealth has been accumulated through the exercise of excessive profits, exploitation, influence, corruption, stealing, lying, you name it. And the poor in this country and throughout the world have been poor for generations. For many reasons. Thousands are dying every hour from hunger and illness, not from squandering their wealth.

Your attitude really is repulsively disgusting. Get back under your rock. The world doesn't need you.

Repy to 10/14 5:39pm

"No question, the industrial revolution and all that has happened since then has completely changed our standard of living and all that is involved. Probably in many cases, not for the best." - Are you suggesting the standard of living was better before the industrial revolution?

"This has been one of the better exchanges on CW until you came along. Some excellent points on both sides were being rationally presented for a change. Pretty general agreement that greed is corrupting and destructive and must be controlled." - I have been involved in this thread from early on, I made some of the excellent points you speak of. I agreed greed is corrupting and needs to be controlled. It's just not entirely on the part of corporations and definitely not a part of ALL corporations. You guys speak as if there are no "good" corporations.

Your 3rd paragraph makes no sense.

Much of todays wealth has been acquired through hard work, risk taking and smart decisions. We were speaking in the context of America, not worldwide. For the most part(disabled excluded), to be poor and go hungry in America (as an Adult) is a decision or the result of many bad decisions. I'm sorry you don't see it that way, but sometimes the truth hurts and is hard to accept.

Peaking out from under my rock

Any idiot who says corporations haven't contributed to the great growth and expansion of this country is plain ole foolish if not outright ignorant. Sure, there are greedy corporate people just as there are plenty of good-for-nothing paupers. Deming's 80/20 rule serves well in a variety of analysis. I would hate to think we should roll back the clock to times when we depended on snake oils salesman to give us remedies (is that in Obamacare?). And we have the great corporations to thank for the medical advances of today. If we absolutely must start throwing blame, let's throw some at greedy trial lawyers and the lazy crapsters they often represent who want something for nothing. I think the best thing to do instead of tort reform is to have a rule that if you lose the lawsuit, you pay everyone's attorney fees. That would stop a huge portion of these, unclog the court systems, and keep the lazy arse plaintiffs mugging people for their income rather than stealing from the successful. Oh, sorry if I offended any good lawyers out there. I know you exist but for the sake of some of the idiots who read this, I don't think metaphors and $30k words would help. :-)

Bev

80/20 ROCK

Corporations have contributed to the growth and expansion of this country often at the expense of those who were unjustly exploited. Study history and you will find this to be true.

Yes, we have the corporations to thank for the medical advances of today, but at the expense of injury to the “human guinea pigs” in prisons and third world countries.

Blame the system and those who would not improve upon it to serve people ethically rather than the almighty dollar exclusively. People create institutions not the other way around. So we the people have a say in what happens in our society regarding those institutions whether legal, medical, financial, etc. We only need to band together as well informed, civic minded citizens peacefully promoting our ideas. Not the loud, misinformed hecklers and gun toters who are just venting .

Greedy trial lawyers have nothing on the greedy mega-corporations out there. If it were not for the fear of paying out big time to a plaintiff, the corporations would run 100% of everything rather than 99.99%, if you get my rhetorical drift?

I can tell you from personal experience of my being medically injured by a doctor that unless you have lots of money to begin a legitimate malpractice lawsuit that you haven’t got a snowball’s chance in Hades of succeeding against big malpractice insurance corporations. So we need risk taking, trial lawyers to level the playing field for the humble plaintiff. Even then if the case is not 99.99% rock solid, even the trial lawyers might not take the case. Also, the corporate medical lobbyists have created laws which protect the doctors from the patients more than the patients are protected from the doctors.

So please become more well informed from all sources and decide with your brain rather than with malice. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones. Given the 80/20 rule perhaps 20% of the greedy are causing 80% of the problems. So it would follow that we need to do something about 80% of the corporate greed by focusing on the 20% of the greedy. That is an excellent starting point, glad you mentioned it.

Eh?

If you think American corporations are so corrupt, manipulative, exploiting and greedy, why don't you move to Canada? eh?

There is entirely too much conspiracy theory, big bad corporation fearing, junk being spewed on this thread.

Where would we be without corporations? Amish? There's nothing wrong with being Amish, I understand their thinking.

Open your mind, Eh?

I am against corporate greed, not corportations, duh? Eh!! If you are so much in favor of corporations having carte blanche why don't you move to China or Singapore or HongKong the ultimate corporate societies. Oh yeah, another one is Dubai where the corpoarations got things so locked up that there are still debtors prisons for when they lay you off and you can't pay your bills back to them.

The junk on this thread is that your type wishes to ignore any corporate corruption, exploitation or unfair advantage.

75+ jobs in FSM

The local paper has over 75 job vacancies posted toady. Some require no skills other than a warm body. To go hungry in Fort Smith is a choice.

another wingnut surfacees! the corporate cheerleeder

So in reply you even close with the part of a name! Well B, won't waste our time replying. It is too obvious another one has popped. Wing nut that is. Obvious you only follow two Aussie-owned news-mongers, Fox and WSJ. Another very wealthy corporate-type who only wants to do good! And keep the American public misinformed and confused. Which ain't difficult.

Give them a break.

Give wingnuts a break, they got their security and are to afraid to consider anyone elses misfortune out of fear of contagion after all they probably go to church regularly to reinforce their idea of how the world is supposed to be rather than how it really is........insecurity written all over it..........let's be compassionate, I am not being sarcastic either. Amen

Give wingnuts a break?

Yea..Yea I guess your right. I think I'll go drink a glass
of wine, and try to feel compassion for them.

I really don't think one glass will do it.

Fox News is Very Informative

I herd on Fox news the other day that the government
was going to waste our money on honey bee research.

Just shows you how wastefull those libs. can be.

Corporate greed what's next?

Maybe... declaring our US currence worthless, as to have a conversion to Euro common markets. And so far that progress
has been moving full steam ahead.

They have done everything but slap us in the face but the
American people choose to bury their head in the sand.

American head buried in the sand??

The euro might be a good thing. It may get our collective heads out of where the sun don't shine. Americans alway wait for a crisis to manage. We don't need foresight because we can ultimately bomb someplace in the world for corporate profit. Corporate Mercenary vis a vis enlisted soldier. The soldier gets killed and the corporate contractor makes a "killing" all the way to the bank.

Corporate greed and

Corporate greed and politicians greed are both to blame.
Why did Washington sit back and allow imports to be less expensive to purchase than American made products?
Yes, greed for corporations to be globally competitive.
It starts with outsourcing components for a product, then greed sets in to cut labor and benefit cost by moving manufacturing plants to Mexico.
This circle jerk from politicians(Republicans and Democrats) and large corporations have turned us into a service country. Hell my Dr. Marten boots are made in China. I wish they would call them Dr. Chings so I would pass them up. Sadly, I likely couldn't find an American made boot.
I think we are far too in debt with China for anything or anyone to tackle imports not to mention would be hazardous to ones health.

Yes, you can sit on your

Yes, you can sit on your front porch swing made in Viet Nam and look at what you thought was an American made Harley Davidson while having a Belgium owned Budweiser.
With your overseas made pair of Levi's and Dr. Martin China made boots.
Very Sad!

US products outsourced

I have a question? The government says we can create millions of new green energy jobs.

Will the new green jobs and parts be made here in the US
or will they end up being outsourced to Mexico?

Well.. maybe when the sun starts shinning again maybe people commits and outlook will brighten up.

The sun is outsourced!

The sun is outsourced!

TAXES... TAXES... TAXES... and INFLATION!

T.David, you are always right.... You must not be as smart as our President and Congress... They can provide health care for 40,000,000 extra people ....10 to 20,000,000 being illegal aliens and save money... Marlin has nothing on them...
We may not stop all... but can slow it down.. Everyone is afraid to say anything... because of broken knee caps and the black helicopters... etc.
I predict that in less than 20 years INFLATION will be like a 6-20 percent tax... especially hard hit will be the older people.. In fact, we will have a service country.. in a few years...
I may not see it, but you and our kids and our grand kids will...

A surtax should not add

A surtax should not add insult to injury by taxing the poor because poverty is not temporary. Poverty remains as long as greed exists. A sales surtax exempting food, medicine, education and energy would be more equitable. 3% adds up fast for people who have very little income whether they work or receive benefits. The movers and shakers have created this mess, let their taxes fix it. This country fights wars with poor man’s blood and rich man’s treasure. The rich man has much to give, the poor man can only give the ultimate, his life and has already given more than a fair share. The situation is already more than fair to the haves as opposed to the have nots.

As you describe, members of a household would all contribute and sacrifice in tough times. If a household member had a better job than all the rest from which to contribute more in order to prevent the eviction of all living in the house would he not “pitch-in” , or would he move out on his own and leave all others to fend for themselves? I guess it would come down to whether all were family and friends. So it is here.

If you enjoy good fortune do you despise those who do not or do you have compassion that they not suffer anymore than necessary? That is the point. If you do well at everyone else’s expense, then don’t complain when things go bad for you. What goes around , comes around, as they say.

Do we care for our fellow Americans or is it everyone for themselves?

The answer is that, it depends on good times or bad. We can’t seem to decide as a society or care enough for that matter in good times, never mind the bad times.

Poverty has always and WILL

Poverty has always and WILL always exist. You can't eliminate poverty. Every society has tried and every society has failed because the economics don't work. There will always be upper and lower classes.

"This country fights wars with poor man’s blood and rich man’s treasure. The rich man has much to give, the poor man can only give the ultimate, his life and has already given more than a fair share." - THIS MIGHT HOLD WATER IF WE DIDN'T HAVE AN ALL 'VOLUNTEER' MILITARY AND IF YOU COULD BUY YOUR WAY OUT OF MILITARY SERVICE UNTIL THEN, IT'S A STUPID COMMENT.

People don't do well at others expense, people do well because they decide to rise up and work hard. GIVE UP THE VICTIM MENTALITY.

STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES, Hey Gomer, got chocolate?

If Poverty has always and WILL Anonymous chooses to use the word STUPID into this discussion then it is fair game to address stupidity as well. So, how stupid is a stupid comment. Not stupid at all I would say because comments are expressions of ideas. In this forum the ideas should flow without rude judgement and with open minds. Those open minds don’t strive to be right all of the time, but seek the truth and reasonable solutions to problems.

Forgive MY ignorance as I did not realize that NONE or our volunteer military members or their spouses and children at home live below the poverty line or are underpaid.

Many people “VOLUNTEER” for military careers for lack of other jobs. People can be “coerced to volunteer” in many ways, including economically. There are inherent dangers but some feel they have no choice but to take the risk if they expect a certain reward for their work. If you believe you have no choice you are being VICTIMIZED. What is STUPID is if a person does not realize he/she is a victim of circumstance. Those circumstances can be controlled by those with money and power: the rich get richer while the poor get poorer.

You can rise up and work very hard and still be a victim of corporate greed. If you don’t believe that to be a circumstance, then maybe you are right after all……..There are indeed STUPID COMMENTS…..YOU NAILED IT, BRAVO!!!

You Nailed It

You can rise up and work very hard and still be a victim
of corporate greed. Well written, that was my point for
all of us. It doesn't matter if your red, blue, independent,
white, black, brown or yellow this corporate creed BS will
soon consume are American Way of Life.

I really think that it can tracked back to a hand full of
people. These rich buzzards control our political leaders our media and even some of our church faiths. They hide under a smoke screen by creating a division in our country in many different ways. I know in the past, we have always had some money influence by big money but not like what's going on today.

If people would just pay attention and start asking questions.. like, why am I being told to take up an issue on something and who's behind it? Then follow the money trail back to the source. Only then will these identies be exposed. These rich groups have their own agenda and it's not yours. They don't care if we all go belly up!

What we really need is some grass roots groups such as the
tea baggers that would go after these buzzards. If we don't do something with these money vultures they will consume our American way of life and then move on.

One good example, please think about this with an open mind. Rush Linbaugh (media) lost a lot of votes for the republicans in this last Presidential election. He talked so mean about democrates and even tried to cause havok in the demo. primaries by having republicans register as demo.

I know in the past a lot of demo. voted for a republican
presidents but in this last election Rush Linbaugh was the republican party own worst enemy. Now ask yourself what was his real agendy. He's makes millions of dollars a year
enough to buy his own foot ball team.

Just My Thought,

Black Helicopter

Flash..

Name Black Helicopter will not be used for anymore commits.

Rush isn't buying his own team,,,

He is part of a group who has pooled funds to purchase the St. Louis Rams. Rush isn't a key player either. Check your facts, fellow, before parroting Chris Wallace on the citywire.

Hush Rush!!!......Black Chopper

Limburger Butt abuses the first amendment more than he abuses prescription drugs. His shock jock status makes him a rich man. So he insults, distorts the truth and says everything short of shouting fire in a crowded theater...and he walks that free speech tightrope very well. If nothing is sacred in order to make money than good for Rush. But you cannot take him seriously, he is a diversion, he is entertainment and bad comedy. So, tune in and listen while he laughs all the way to the bank.

Poverty Will Always Exist

We all know poverty exists! The problem is, there is too
much poverty because of greed and rich man's treasure.

For example, millions of people have worked hard and managed to pull themselves out of poverty only to see their homes, jobs and dreams vanish. Do YOU think this is
the American dream. I think not!

When a segment of our population have 90+ percent of the
money it doesn't leave an even playing field for small business or the poor to succeed.

I would also bet a large percent of our Military fighting
for our freedoms (right now) will come home to poverty stricken families while the rich get richer.

Flash.. //

Black Helicopter

Again with the Victim Mentality...

I contend that there is too much poverty because people make stupid decisions. The greed you speak of is more in the eye of the poverty stricken as it is in the eye of the wealthy. The US population, as a whole, is overconsuming and overspending, thus driving themselves into poverty. I challenge you to visit those you are claiming are poverty level. They have larger flat screens than I do, nicer cell phones (and packages) than I do, drive nicer vehicles than I do, more cable chanels than I do, etc, etc, etc. Most adults living in poverty, unknowingly (sometimes knowingly) chose to live in poverty by the decisions they made and make in everyday life.

My point, I choose to spend my money wisely. I invest my money in assets that grow like businesses, stocks, bonds, etc. I work hard for what I have and the playing field is just fine. I grew up in the Sunnymede area, not exactly silver spoon. I took my first job at Jeffery Boys Club in the 6th grade. While times are tough now, that is just an excuse to CHOOSE to live in poverty. I was just told last night that Panera Bread is short staffed and can't get anyone to apply for a job. They are just about willing to hire on spot. To not work is a decision, not a circumstance.

By the way, there isn't a single segment of our population that has 90% of the wealth. If there is, give us a link.

If the Military come home to poverty, it's a result of poor choices. They are paid quite well, especially while serving and getting hazzard pay.

What is huppi?

1% of the population owns more than the other 90% combined?

Then why does the first line say 1% owns 40% (not 90%)?

What is huppi??

Read it over until you "get it". It can be confusing at first. I didn't understand it right away. Although 1% own 40%, it is still more than 90% of the rest of us own combined.

WISEMAN SPEAKS Again with the victim mentality

Congratulations for being smart/lucky enough to prosper so you can afford the luxury of being judgemental and cruel towards the less fortunate. Poor choices and stupid decisions must be things you never have done. If that is true you should be the richest person in the world,a rocket scientist, speak 15+ languages fluently, cure all disease, etc. The fact is that people make decisions based upon what is known at a point in time hopefully with a clear presence of mind. Apparently your world is perfect, good for you.

However, I am concerned that in that perfect world your kind are not more enlightened. While I don't wish failure and poverty on anyone. I do wonder if hard times were to befall you whether you would modify your opinion.

Current economic conditions may present you with the opportunity to find out, be careful. And remember the adage about people who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Wishing you continued prosperity and growing social awarness.

Victim Mentality

I would agree with you on your points of thinking.

Myself, our business management is similar and I also have seen a lot of waste and bad management from people who could have made better decisions.

Good blog,

Black Helicopter

Dam.. some of you guys conservative thinking is starting
to make sense.

Ironic example

Ironic – while I’m reading this, KFSM is reporting on SWEPCO’s anticipated rate increase. Their reporter is interviewing a young couple living on a ‘fixed income’ as he complains about how tight his finances are… and KFSM’s cameraperson was savvy enough to include the couple’s fancy big screen TV in the background.

Big screen in the fixed income backround

Maybe the TV was a gift from someone else.

Smoking Pork Chops?

I also noticed he was sitting on the front porch smoking. Before the smokers jump my case, I'm only pointing out that he made a choice to spend money on smokes instead of pork chops or saving for his electric bill. It's his choice to make but his complaints fall on deaf ears after seeing 30 seconds of his life.

David, Problem is surtax or

David,
Problem is surtax or flat tax = good business strategy not political strategy.
Business- Not making money? Streamline and raise your price!
Politicians- No money? Borrow
The politicians would need to debate your proposal and perform a thorough analysis and dissect for months on such an easy solution.

Increased Federal Taxes

Those who prosper the most because of America should pay the most due to America, plain and simple.

to the one said...increase federal taxes

the ones who prosper the most should pay more taxes,THEY DO!!!!!!Look, there is something people need to understand, once again I know there is greed, but there also is class envy, jealousy. The rich are the movers and shakers, the more they make, they also create wealth for others(Bill Gates). The goverment should slash spending and cut taxes, and let the economic engine that is the people of this county goto work.....

Class Envy??? Anonymous

I would be happy with health, basic security, safety and proper nutrition. All the rest is icing on the cake. Speak for yourself. Maybe you are the jealous one.

Who are the others?

The movers and shakers create wealth for what others?....Is it China,Israel,Mexico,Afghanistan, tell me who are the others? It certainly is not America. The rich and powerful exploit every offshore opportunity there is rather than in the U.S. when given the choice. It all comes down to the bottom line. That being the case, the government owned by the corporations will not do anyting to threaten that bottom line. So how rich does a company or individual need to be. I guess you can ask former Enron employees for their opinion to get a good idea. Things are just not that simple. When you oversimplify the issues because you cannot compete with the more powerful faction, you might as well bend over and stick your head in the sand and hope the predators don't eat you alive out in the jungle. This is why we need social safety nets to maintain dignity and safety. The Rich can afford it. If you read history, they can't afford not to.

Too much conspiracy theory on here...

The rich are not out to get you!

The rich are not out to get you???

Of course it is nothing personal,it is just business when shoddy products are sold to the unwitting consumer. Or when mass layoffs occur, nothing personal. The guy who just let you go will still go golfing....maybe you can caddy for him........you will have plenty of "leisure" time while out of work............Gimme a Break, every businessman has an angle or else he is out of business.

The rich are out to get richer no matter who they burn on the way up.
