Endorsement pressures debated in final days of tight 3rd District runoff

Last-minute politicking in the runoff election for the 3rd District Congressional race includes allegations and denials of the pressures and promises involved in seeking endorsements from Kurt Maddox and Benton County Judge Mike Moore.

Maddox and Moore were two of the eight Republican candidates in the GOP primary for the 3rd District race. Rogers Mayor Steve Womack captured the most votes in the primary (19,358, or 31.2% of the vote), with State Sen. Cecile Bledsoe of Rogers gaining the second place spot (8,211, or 13.3% of the vote).

An endorsement battle then began, with Bledsoe being endorsed by 3rd District GOP candidates Gunner DeLay (who came in a close third with 8,053 votes), Steve Lowry and Doug Matayo. Bledsoe recently was endorsed by former Alaska Gov. and 2008 Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Bledsoe also has the endorsement of former 3rd District Congressman Asa Hutchinson and other “establishment” members of the Arkansas GOP.

It is the endorsement of 3rd District GOP primary candidate Kurt Maddox that has created the most buzz. Maddox, the only candidate in the primary to endorse Womack, received a visit to his home by Bledsoe and one of her supporters the night prior to his endorsement of Womack.

Maddox told The City Wire that Bledsoe and one of her supporters did come to his home the evening before he endorsed Womack. He refused to comment on details of the meeting, saying he didn’t want to get “caught up in what would really be a nasty he-said-she-said” issue just a few days before the election.

“I’m just not sure I should get in the middle of this,” Maddox said.

Moore, who has not issued an endorsement, laughed when asked if he’d been pressured by either camp.

“People that know me know that that won’t work with me,” Moore said, adding that he was not heavily lobbied for an endorsement.

DeLay did admit to sending Maddox a text message a few days before Maddox endorsed Womack: “Kurt think long and hard about your decision. I am now convinced Cecile is going to win this thing. If you come down on the losing side with a moderate you will do a great deal of damage to your future. Just be careful and prayerful.”

The Womack campaign said the text reads as a threat.

DeLay, who responded Saturday by phone while campaigning door-to-door in Springdale for Bledsoe, said it was not a threat but part of a previous message in which he told Maddox that Womack has a moderate stance on abortion in that he supports abortion in the case of incest and rape. DeLay said that exception is viewed by the “hard core” Republicans in Northwest Arkansas as a moderate position.

“He would forever damage his credibility with those (hard core) people,” DeLay said in explaining his approach to convince Maddox to not endorse Womack.

DeLay also sent The City Wire a text response he received from Maddox: “Thanks Gunner. I have spoke with both and looked at a lot of options, If you were the candidate things might be different.”

“If you read that, it doesn’t sound like he thought that (previous text) was a threat,” DeLay said.

The whole thing is petty politics from the Womack campaign, according to DeLay, who quickly and adamantly rejected the idea he’d been promised a position on Bledsoe’s staff if she wins.

“It just seems like a lot of last-minute whining by someone who is fixing to get their tail kicked,” DeLay said.

Womack said he’s kept his distance from the rumors of pressure and promises from the Bledsoe camp. However, he believes them to be true.

“I’m not at all involved in this thing. .... but the bottom line is that I don’t condone that stuff and I’m disgusted that we’ve got a situation that smacks of cronyism,” Womack said. “You can lawyer-talk this thing to death about it not being a threat, but I think it was a threat to Kurt Maddox and that’s exactly what’s wrong with Washington right now. ... This is kind of like Chicago-style politics and I don’t think there is any place for it in the 3rd District.”

Womack didn’t entirely reject the notion that the race had tightened in the last few days. He declined to offer details, but did say his internal polls show a close race.

“But it’s always smart to go into this (last few days before election) and work like it’s a tight race,” he said. “We know we are in a race. We said that from the very beginning. ... It’s definitely a new game.”

Not bad for a Desperate Aging Old Lady

In his own words in this article, and for the first time Mayor Womack finally admits by his own "internal polling" that the race is close. It was reported on the City Wire in a previous post dated May 24th that Womack's internal polling showed him ahead of State Senator Cecile Bledsoe by 29 percentage points. In less that two weeks what most would have considered an impossible lead to overcome has evaporated as voters in the 3rd District have carefully measured two candidates and have recognized that there are many differences in these two candidates. We are days from witnessing the comeback of a great conservative, a great lady, and the first elected Congresswoman from the 3rd District of the great State of Arkansas, Cecile Bledsoe. Please vote on June 8th. Your vote does count!

expected

It is expected that his 30 point lead would shrink a little. I'm sure his internal polls reflect that, but he's going to win this thing by a landslide still. Everyone, and I mean everyone, that I know is voting for him because of what he has done in Rogers.

Aging Old Lady

What has Bledsoe done for Arkansas except vote to raise taxes? Three times! She has mislead the public about Steve Womack. He actually started the push for 287(g) training - sent his police officers to the training and as a result he deported over 1,000 illegal immigrants. Bledsoe has been a State Senator for years and what has she done to fight illegal immigration? NOTHING! Why has she not pushed legislation for Arkansas? Why is she just now coming out (at election time) and claiming she is going to fight illegal immigration. Sorry Bledsoe, but a little too late. I live in NWA - in her district- and never heard of her until the this election.

Senator Bledsoe

She is completing here second year as State Senator and hasn't been one for years as you stated...geeesh She ran unopposed for the seat which shows her strength and respect in NWA. She has been involved in the Benton County Republican Party for years as a grass roots supporter. Where have you been?

RE:Not bad for a Desperate Aging Old Lady

She had better eat her wheaties, then, because if she can't even show up for debates and forums sponsored by Republican Women now -- she sends her spouse or one of her endorsers instead -- do you honestly expect her to show up for outright battles on the House Floor? Somehow I don't think that husbands or endorsers are allowed to place a vote for her in Congress.

Every time I hear about

Every time I hear about Sarah Palin's endorsement I remind myself that her PAC (Susan B Anthony List) only endorses pro-life females. Wasn't Blesoe bitching about sexism a day or two ago?

The old gray mare just ain't what she used to be

What speaks even louder though is that Cecile hasn't got a poll of her own to show her in the lead. You know she's doing them, but she can't even get one showing a close enough margin to encourage her voters.

whatever

Yeah, she is doing polls. Yeah they show her in the lead. No, there is no reason to yack about it. Now Womack says they always expected a close race. In reality, they declared the race over and fell asleep at the switch because of arrogance. On Tuesday they will pay the price.

Hey Whatever -

Womack has never been arrogant and did not fall asleep at the switch. He has been working hard all along and has never declared the race over, but just the opposite. Unfortunately, Bledsoe had to turn to dirty politics. She is so indebted to the special interests groups and Asa Hutchinson its pathetic. Her negative tactics have made the Republican Party look bad this year. The great folks of 3rd District will look beyond her tactics and vote for Womack on Tuesday. It was pretty sorry what she did with her mailers by trying to mislead the public. I hope Womack kicks her butt in the runoff!

In his own words

In the words of a staunch Womack supporter just a few minutes ago "I've never gone from the top to the underdog position so fast".

Now I wish Kurt were running still

It takes a lot of guts to stand up to the machine like that. I thought Mike Moore had more spine though. But I understand he doesn't want to jeopardize his political career if Womack somehow manages to lose this election. It's sad to see good people strong armed like this.

In her own words

In the words of a staunch Bledsoe supporter just a few minutes ago "Our polls really don't show us in the lead."

You caught us

You are right. We are behind 20. Don't even try, you have it in the bag. Go back to sleep, Womack, you can win without trying.

Caught you by the toe

I believe it. You guys really screwed yourselves when you went negative and edited quotes. Now people know they can't trust Cecile and will either vote for Womack or not show up at all.

Obama's unemployment numbers just went up again

Gunner just lost his second job in a month. If Matayo lost his too does that mean Cecile has to show up and do her own debates now?

3rd District

Bledsoe has really disappointed me in her negative tactics and her intimidation towards the other candidates. I hope Womack pulls this thing off and this will keep the policial establishment from ruining the 3rd District. Bledsoe can not stand on her own two feet. I was looking forward to seeing Womack and Bledsoe on the stand together for debate and she sent her husband to speak for her. She was offered free air time on a local radio station to debate Womack and would not accept. She would be eaten alive in Congress. She has basically put herself in the likes of Lincoln and Halter. I hope Womack pulls this off because we need a real leader in Congress. Poor Gunner will have to join someone elses campaign so he can get a job because Womack is much smarter than that.

Issues

I find it very interesting that Bledsoe has misinformed the public about Womack's stance on illegal immigration. I did my research and Womack actually started sending the police officers to 287(g) training and he deported over 1,000 illegal immigrants. She claims Womack is soft, but she has done nothing herself. I was hoping she would show up at an event so I could ask her why, as a Senator, she did not champion any legislation for the state of Arkansas to fight illegal immigration. Also, when Womack was catching all the crap for standing up and doing something about, none of the politicians supported him. I think Womack has great courage and doesn't put up with all the BS of the politicians and this is someone we need to represent us in Washington. Womack received my vote again!

Response

It must also make you feel real warm and fuzzy to know that while Womack does have an impeccable record on taking a stand on illegal immigration he now has just as strong a record for accepting campaign contributions from Tysons who is a strongly suspected employer violator of the very illegal activity that Womack is fighting against. You can't have it both way folks.

Tyson

I have not heard of Tyson's having these issues for a long time. If we get people like Womack in Congress the immigration mess will get fixed. Most of those folks that are in Congress have not had experience at the local level in dealing with illegal immigration. At least Womack has a grasp on what is going on and can help fix it. He is off to a good start with the deportation of over 1,000. Send the illegals home and let them apply through the legal process to come into this country and work for Tysons. Or better yet, get some of the unemployed to go to work at Tysons and cut down on the government handouts.

Both ways:

Tyson's HR department works with ICE officials constantly. And as for 'having it both ways', Ms. Bledsoe's voters seem to relish that -- they thrive off her 'true conservative' PR work, but don't seem to mind at all paying more for their milk and hospital stays!

Yo blockhead

Its a direct quote: Pathway to citizenship. DIRECT QUOTE. If you don't want it mailed out, then dont say it. Blockhead. He said it. Get over it.

path to a work visa and eventual citizenship

That must have a different definition to you than to him. He opposed amnesty completely. He said the ones without criminal records will have to get at the end of the line behind all the people trying to immigrate legally. The criminals can't ever get back in. Bledsoe on the other hand won't go as far as Womack on illegal immigration. Not only did Womack deport 1,000 illegals but he also plans to cut off any benefits to illegals still here. Cecile Bledsoe on the other hand just voted with the Democrats to pass a $100 Million tax, so illegals can keep getting free healthcare.

Who would you rather speak for you?

You know Womack will be a national leader to. I can see Womack debating issues on CSPAN, CNN, Fox etc. Can you even picture Cecile on live TV? She would be looking down reading a pre-prepared statement. Is it just me, or does she sound over-medicated?

Still Waiting

I am still waiting to hear her. She did not show up at either NWA event, she sent her husband. I thought she and Womack were going to take the platform and speak on their issues and have an opportunity to debate a little and Womack was the only one present. I am worried that she would not be able to handle the pressure in Washington. Saw Womack in action the other day and he was so energized! He is very polished and articulate.

Re: Response

So Womack should follow Bledsoe's lead and only take contributions from out of state PACs and businesses? http://www.fec.gov/DisclosureSearch/mapHSApp.do?election_yr=2010 Does Cecile even live in Arkansas? Will she and her husband close up the business and move back from Kentucky if she's elected? Commonwealth Urology: Bledsoe James H MD www.commonwealth-uro.com 250 Foxglove Drive Mt Sterling, KY 40353-9770 (859) 498-1460

Tyson

Throw your "supposedly"s out there all you want. It has been obvious for a long time that Bledsoe can't garner the business community's support. She can't create jobs and she hasn't done squat in her years in the legislature to combat illegal immigration. She's had her chance and she wasted it. Cecile, you're fired.

Yo Blockhead - Response

Bledsoe has taken bits and pieces from one speech and used them with a different topic. She tries to mislead the public. Womack wants benefits cut for illegals, send them home and let them use the legal process to come into this country legally, that is the pathway to citizenship - through legal processes. She has lied by stating he was for amnesty - he is NOT! Womack took the heat for the 287(g) training and where was Bledsoe's support. Politicians did not support him because they were afraid of upsetting someone and losing votes. He also deported 1,000 illegal immigrants. During Bledsoe's tenure as a Senator, why did she not push legislation to help the mayors of Arkansas with the illegal immigration issues. Womack has first hand experience with these issues and he will actually do something about it when he goes to Washington. He has taken action throughout his term, not just at election time. One more thing, I would like to applaud Womack for taking the time to meet with the community and business leaders across 3rd District and discuss strategies for economic development and job creation. He has his priorities straight!

Who he surrounds himself with

If Lance Cargill and Rick Walker are examples of the type of people Womack would surround himself with if he wins the 3rd District race, people should be bothered. Cargill is an ethically-challenged former Okla. legislator who is a partner in the firm JC Consulting, that Womack has paid more than $40,000 for "campaign management services" and "fundraising services," according to his FEC filings. Womack told the Fort Smith Times Record on March 16, JC Consulting was advising his campaign part-time, doing market research and advertising. He also said Cargill wasn't performing fundraising for the campaign -- which is contradicted by his own FEC filings. If JC Consulting is only working part-time for the campaign, why is the firm the only recipient of payments for "campaign management services" and "fundraising services," according to FEC filings. With regard to Rick Walker's ridiculous copyright infringement claim, lawsuit threat and personal insults directed at Bledsoe, Womack is AWOL, but only after forwarding Walker's copyright claim and lawsuit threat to the media.

Attacks on Womack

Cargill and Walker are in business for consulting and advertising work. They have not broken the law and not going with Mayor Womack to Washington. They work with numerous political candidates, so please do not present them as staffers for Womack. Blesoe has hidden behind the political establishment and she should be ashamed because she can not run on her own merits, she is running on pitiful attacks against Womack while Womack has kept the high road. If you want to talk about someone with ethical issues, look at Bledsoe. She received a order to stop the ads that violated the Federal Copyright Laws, she has threatened the political career of Maddox, she had her future staffer, Gunner Delay, totally misquoting Womack, she distorted information in her mailers thinking the people of 3rd district are not educated and would believe that crap. She said she is aginst raising taxes but she voted for the cigarette tax, she voted for the milk tax, and she voted for the streamline sales tax. Why could she not be honest with people. All I can say is Cargill and Walker are in business to provide campaign advertising etc. they are not going to Washington. I am more concerned over Bledsoe's ability to be honest with the citizens of 3rd District because she is running for a position to represent us in Washinton.

Recent mailers

I am a Veteran and appalled by the recent mailer of Bledsoe. The only flag Womack ever held up is the American Flag. If Blesoe is going to try to quote Womack, why doesn't she put the entire conversation in the mailer. She only puts snippits in the mailer. Reminds me of the media. She is dishonest and I cannot support someone who tries to mislead the public. I actually heard Womack speak at a forum and he said he would repeal Obamacare and also work to defund it. Obama signed it into law and realistically, it could take years to get this law repealed. The term of Congress is only 2 years and Obama will be President for another 2 years. I like Womack's idea of voting to defund the program. We have enough politicians in Washington that are misguided. After seeing what Bledsoe has done in her campaign, I honestly do not believe a word she says. Thanks to Mayor Womack for staying true to his word and being honest. If you actually listen to Womack, you will be very pleased with his strategy. Bledsoe will not give you the full conversation because Womack uses common sense and makes full sense of what is going on in this country. Even Dick Morris apologized to Womack and when he was in town the other day said Womack would make a fine Congressman.

Maddox

I would have liked to be a fly on the wall at the Maddox house the night Bledose showed up. Gunner also said that Maddox sent a text that if Gunner was the candidate "things might be different." I bet he would have endorsed Womack quicker! Why is it always Delay speaking for Bledsoe?

Funny thing about politics

If bledsoe were to win, is she going to ask for Womack's support to help the republicans win the general election. She has really done herself in on this one. After all the misleading crap she has put out and especially accusing him of being a Democrat she would have some problems down the road. That is why you do not throw people of the same party under the bus. She should have run on her merits and a platform instead of concentrating on bashing Womack. Remember he had around 19,000 votes in the primary. Womack has taken the high road in this campaign and when he wins Tuesday he still has face. The only issue he has brought up against Bledsoe is the fact that she says she is against Tax increases and she voted 3 times to raise taxes. The record shows this as a fact. I bet Whitaker, Democrate candidate, is pulling for Bledsoe right now!

Skoch

No one has mentioned, in the article or the comments, where Skoch stands in all this. The man came in 4th and started with no name recognition. We're all worried about what the establishment thinks and politicians endorsing each other, and we aren't even talking about him. This, in my mind, makes him the only candidate who truly wasn't part of the political machine, and the one that could have stood up for the people over the party better than any of the rest.

i talked to bernie lastnight

i talked to bernie lastnight and he inferred he was pulling for cecile. i said well tues should be interesting? AND HE SAID yes we will see if a true conservative gets elected or not.... this whole raise there has been 7 true consevative and 1 moderate!!!!

I talked to bernie tonight

He said Cecile was not a true conservative, so I guess that means he was actually leaning towards Woamck. It makes sense with both Skoch and Womack being military leaders.

Despicable

These comments are despicable. You people need to get a life...you are sitting in front of a computer whining and crying about how badly you've been treated by the Bledsoe campaign instead of getting voters involved in your cause. Steve is letting you do is dirty work so he can still claim he's "taking the high road". If this is the high road I'm staying where I am. Get a life!

Response to Despicable

The comments are not despicable. What if the tables were turned and a flier came out with Bledsoe and Pelosi's picture blended on the cover stating that she is really a democrat and she raised taxes to cover Obamacare. Even Beebe vetoed her vote on the milk tax increase. Too many kids are already going without and it is a good thing this was vetoed because all it would do is pass the cost on to the consumer. My comments have nothing to do with Womack it is about the misleading crap that has been coming in the mail from the Bledsoe campaign. If Bledsoe raised taxes then put it in the mailer and be honest, do not say you have not raised taxes when you have. I also found out that Womack signed the no tax pledge and she left that out on a mailer. If you are going to tout one for signing it then it is misleading to let the public think that the other did not sign it. I want to have someone that I can trust will be honest with public. I have to give Womack credit, he is an honest guy.

Yes Dale

Anyone who knows Gunner knows who you are. I voted for Gunner and I know he endorsed Cecile but there is no way I will vote for her. I would think that you of all people would be against Cecile Bledsoe because of what she's tried to do by supporting anti 2nd amendment regulations. She says one thing and does another every time, except abortion. But every candidate in the primary was pro-life, including Bledsoe and Womack.

Morfey on DeLay's email to Maddox

Anyone following the primary knows the fall-out between DeLay and myself. Getting to the cause of that fall-out is DeLay's filtering everything through a political filter. Political calculation over principle. In that context, and given the text and obvious tone of Maddox's reply email to DeLay, it is clear DeLay's email was intended as, and understood as, political advice designed to warn Maddox against alienating pro-life conservatives, such as myself. Definitely not a threat... of any kind... and actually - good advice. For Womack to claim this was some type of "Chicago-style politics"... is laughable. - Dale Morfey

Hi Dale

I saw an article today (I believe it was in a newspaper) that stated Bledsoe went to the Maddox home. I do not think those comments were related to the Delay's text, there must be more to the story. I guess she showed up at the Maddox house the night before his endorsement for Womack. I admit, I had to go with Womack this round because we need someone with the stomach to stand up to the establishment in Washington. I am sure Bledsoe is a nice lady, but with the mess we have in Washington, nice isn't going to get it.

Dale - there is more

There was another article beside this one, probably in one of the newspapers. Its not just City Wire that reported this.

Bernie

I hardly believe that Bernie would be for Bledsoe, based on some comments previously said. I was told by some of his folks that they were pulling for Womack if Bernie did not make the run off. Bernie and Steve are both Military Officers and achieved very high ranks. In order to do this, they had to have leadership, discipline, courage, and integrity. Only 20% of Congress has military experience and this is unfortunate because some of the most important decisions they make involve national security and the structure of our forces. We have Soldiers deployed all over the world and we are fighting wars on two fronts, we need someone in there that understands what is going on. Womack has served 30 years in multiple leadership positions and deployed to the Middle East, so he has first hand experience.

2nd Amendment Conservative??

From the Arkansas Rifle and Pistol Association 2000 survey: House District 3 (Rogers) Rep Cecile H. Bledsoe (50), (R) is being challenged by Shirley Coleman (Democrat). Rep. Bledsoe has this to say: 1) Maintain and strengthen the enforcement of existing state restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns. 2) Allow citizens to carry concealed guns. 3) Require background checks of gun buyers at gun shows. 4) Do you support prohibiting Arkansas cities and counties from suing gun or ammunition manufacturers for damages? *YES* ...Rep. Bledsoe scored below average on her voting record, but from this questionaire, the Democratic candidate would do even worse. http://www.arpa-online.org/ratings_2000.html I wonder if Sarah Palin knows about that??

Bledsoe a fraud

After a thorough investigation last evening and talking to all the credible military service organizations, it is clear that the Bledsoe campaign veterans endorsement is a fraud. No one has ever heard of the NWA Veterans Association. Let me make this perfectly clear. Whoever these people are, they DO NOT speak for the American Legion, VFW, Marine Corps League or the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Unlike the so called NWA Veterans Association, the following Commanders and Commandant are providing their names and contact numbers for anyone who has questions. Jake Greeling, Commander, American Legion Post 341 (479) 876 1108 Leslie McFarland, Commander, VFW Post 9063 (479) 876 7299 Lewis Kaslow, Commandant - Marine Corps League Detachment #854 (479) 254 0005 Norvil Lantz , Past Commander, American Legion Post 341 and present Officer for Arkansas State Department of the American Legion 479-855-9814
