Jaycee support

guest commentary by Jeff Riggs, member of the Fort Smith Jaycees

Back in 2002, I had just moved to town and started working.

Having no local friends, and just knowing the people in my office, I was inspired when the president of the company I work for told all the employees he would like to see us involved with community programs.

I began looking for such programs, and began going to meetings for various social/charitable clubs such as Optimists, Kiwanis, Rotary, etc. All were great organizations; however, I often was the youngest person at the meetings and I just did not feel like it was where I wanted to be.

I overheard someone talking about the Jaycees, and that they had a blast at one of their events. I had never heard of this group before so I called to check it out; after talking to the local chapter president of the Jaycees, I was able to obtain some information about what they did and soon attended a meeting. It definitely was not an older crowd like all the others I attended, but rather more like walking into an open young group of people that liked to have fun and help the community.

My first meeting was very interesting to say the least, and I was sold. Most of those people from that meeting are my friends today and great contacts, and six years later I’m still in it.

The group has matured from those days, but is still fun and as welcoming to new people as it was back then. There are many new faces among the more familiar, and many of those new faces are now my friends. After several years of involvement with the Jaycees, I’ve helped participate in the Downtown Christmas Parade, Suddenly Las Vegas, Haunted Trail Ride, Festival of Trees plus many more events that benefit out local community.

All these events have been put on by the Jaycees for many years, and the proceeds have gone to local charities. We recently rented a building downtown Fort Smith (703 Rogers Ave.), and therefore now have a true office meeting location.

We are always coming up with new ideas how to help the local community while bringing entertainment to the local citizens. Additionally, we are always looking for new members to participate and enjoy it like we do.

I just cannot imagine what my life would be like living here in Fort Smith and not joining this outstanding group of young people. This group has helped me make several great personal friendships, brought insight on helping people out, community involvement, great networking and just good old good fashioned fun and I am glad. Because of this, I am grateful that I joined the Jaycees.

Meetings

Where can I find out about meeting times and place? Sounds like an interesting organization, I've been looking for a good way to meet people since moving here.

where to find us

you can go to fortsmithjaycees.com and fill out some lines to get in touch with you and it is private within our organization.

Raft Race

Even if the Jaycee's are bring back an event that was already here before. This one looks like it's starting and finishing at different locations. At least they are bringing something fun to the community and its going to a good cause.

Bed Race

I never heard of the bed race what's that?

duck races

And remember the rubber duckie races off the Garrison Bridge? Those were fun, too. Buy a duck for $5, drop it off the bridge and see whose duck reaches a given point down stream. With inflation and the increase in gaming, ducks might go for $10 or even $25 or more.

All fun ideas, but the ducks

All fun ideas, but the ducks have been disposed of. My wife's now defunct organization got rid of the ducks because of lack of interest and complaints about littering with rubber ducks.

Someone needs to find biodegradable ducks.

Jaycees- "1st Annual Rivertown Raft Race"

We are putting together a homemade human powered river raft race this summer on the 31st of July. Don't miss out on this great community race. We are looking for some good local charities to help out with this race. If your an interested local charity call our local president and we will talk to about what help we need and what we can do for you. If you would like to find out more information about this raft race or more about the Fort Smith Jaycees please visit our website at fortsmithjaycees.com

Inaugural, not 1st Annual!!!

That 1st annual mistake is one of my grammar pet peeves.

First annual - it's a fine expression.

Some people get upset when the “first annual” occurrence of some event is announced, arguing that it doesn’t become annual until it’s been repeated. But “first annual” simply means “the first of what is planned to be an annual series of events”—it’s a fine expression.

Still an error

Note that your link still lists "first annual" as an error because the majority of people prefer not to use the term.

Side note, this is not the first annual rivertown raft race. The Jaycees are recycling an old event. It was a great event back in the day, with many companies taking part. I wish the Jaycees success with their raft race revival.

Raft Race

It was called The United Way Raft Race. The Rivertown Race may be a recycled idea but it is a new endeavor for the City of Fort Smith, one that hopefully will give folks a new energy and sense of belonging the way it did during the time of the original Raft Race. While you are at it, let's have the old bed races down Garrison Avenue!

RiverRaftReclamation

Maybe we can hang some sensors behind the rafts to sample water quality.........need to know!
