Vinny Nguyen, a fifth grader from Christ the King Catholic School, spelled “cilantro” and “eulogy” correctly to win the 28th annual Sebastian County Spelling Bee, held Saturday (Feb. 4) in Breedlove Auditorium on the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith campus.
The event was sponsored by BancorpSouth.
Nguyen’s climb to the top took a little more than two hours and 12 rounds. He was awarded a $2,000 scholarship to UAFS and the event’s traveling trophy, which will be displayed at his school until next year’s event.
BENTONVILLE — In the world of Scrabble warfare, the battle begins with a single word.
On Saturday night (Feb. 4), teams of Scrabble players sitting around tables in the Bentonville Doubletree Guest Suites carefully arranged their postage stamp-sized wooden tiles, spelling out “B-I-R-T-H-D-A-Y” to kick off the 2012 Literacy Council of Benton County Scrabble Wars and mark the council’s 40th anniversary.
The 3rd annual Empty Bowls event will take place Thursday, February 16th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the Van Buren High School commons. For the price of your $15 ticket you will receive: a handmade bowl, a dinner of soup shared with others in the community, and the satisfaction of helping students in need. All money raised at this event will go to the Community Services Clearinghouse's “Meals for Kids” backpack program within the Van Buren School District.
The H.E.A.L.T.H. Fest is an event in Harrison, Ar, on April 14 and 15, 2012. It is promoting healthy life choices. The H.E.A.L.T.H. acronym stands for Healthy Eating, Active Living for Total Health. There will be vendors on our beautiful historic square selling healthy delicious food, information on healthy life-style choices, cooking, dancing and sports demonstrations and lots of fun physical activities for kids and adults. The Ozark Fitness Challenge is a part of the H.E.A.L.T.H. Fest. It will have several walk/run events in a variety of distances.

SPRINGDALE – The Jones Center for Families and the American Red Cross finalized an agreement Friday for the Red Cross to lease an office at the center and to rent additional space for educational classes. The arrangement is in line with the Jones Trust board of directors’ desire to find new sources of income to ensure the center’s long-term sustainability.
