Fort Smith sanitation service readies to expand south

Part of the effort by the Fort Smith Department of Sanitation in gearing up to begin trash and recycling collection service in south Fort Smith is work of about 35 people — full-time and temp workers — to help deliver new carts.

The Fort Smith board of directors voted Nov. 3 to end a sanitation contract with Altes Sanitation and pull all the city’s residential collection under the Fort Smith Department of Sanitation. At the time, Altes was the only third-party trash service handling residential waste in Fort Smith, with the DOS handling 82%, or the other 20,820. accounts

DOS Director Baridi Nkokheli said the 35 temporary employees will begin work after the July 4 holiday to deliver carts to more than 4,900 households. He said up to eight rented moving trucks will be used in the process.

Residents switched from Altes to the DOS will receive two carts. One cart will be a 95-gallon trash cart, the other a 65-gallon recycling cart. The carts will be delivered with an attached packet of information about the new service. Days of service will change. Maps of the service areas with the day of service are provided at the end of this story.

“The carts have sturdy wheels and attached lids for customer convenience, to prevent loss of the lid, and to keep trash and recyclables from being scattered by wind,” noted a memo from Nkokheli to the city board. “The carts provide a convenient place to store trash and recyclables between collection days which is almost completely impervious to animal intrusion.”

Residents may request a 65-gallon trash cart by calling the DOS dispatch office (784-2350).

The DOS is also working with area media outlets to explain the new service, and will use the Connect CTY service — an automated telephone calling system — to reach residents in the affected areas. Also, the DOS has sent mailers detailing the service change to the households.

Nkokheli said no employees were added to handle the new service area. An automated truck — which uses a loading arm to pick up the carts, dump them and set them back in place — will be used and an older-model rear-loader truck outfitted with a “cart tipper” is available if needed, Nkokheli said.

The DOS, which operates as an enterprise fund and is not part of the city’s general budget, should see a revenue gain from the new service.

DOS Division Manager Joseph Hopper said in March that gross revenue should increase by about $380,000 for 2010. For 2011, the DOS should recognize a gross revenue from the additional service area of around $816,900. That revenue will help fund operations and a planned expansion of the Fort Smith landfill.

The DOS plans a $2 million, 12.5-acre expansion of the landfill in 2010. Fort Smith has one of the largest landfills in Arkansas and Oklahoma. The landfill, which benefited from receiving former Fort Chaffee property, has a lifespan of more than 65 years and encompasses 1,102 acres.

Privacy? Who do you trust with your garbage?

How timely! This morning I watched two garbage men from Altes Sanitation OPEN MY GARBAGE BAGS and going through pulling out treasures they want for themselves. My daughter is doing some major housecleaning and cleared out her old bedroom. These garbage men evidently like what she throws away, because they took several items to the cab of the truck. I watched them dig around in three bags before the truck pulled away from my curb. Thank goodness this contract is about to end. How would you feel watching a couple shirtless guys pawing through your personal garbage?

who cares dude, take the

who cares dude, take the stuff to the dump yourself if you dont want people going through your garbage. I moved to an area the city serves from altus and just wait till you get the city service Robert. The guy in the automated truck will not stop if anything is even remotely in front of the can. They dont work any holidays (unlike altus they are there nearly ever holiday minus maybe christmas/thanksgiving) and the city makes you have a huge ugly blue cart. You will see, i promise the city service may be a great $$ maker for the city but good old fashioned competition, like altus provides is needed!!!

Right On, Matt!! The City Can't Compete with Altes

What all these social engineering folks are forgetting is the bottom line is production at a profit. Altes, a private enterprise, after 50 years of profitable service to Fort Smith Southside is being forced out. Every time I ever called Altes for a special pickup, Lucy, the owner, would answer the phone herself. That doesn't happen in Government operations. Baridi Nkokheli, the director of the Fort Smith Sanitation who lives all the way up in northwest Arkansas and runs around portraying Bass Reeves, won't be answering your calls. So Altes, to you and your employees, thanks for all the years of exemplary service and a textbook example of how private enterprise "Gets It Done".

government vrs private

the government should never compete with private business. period! when government tries to compete with private, bad things happen. anyone that thinks government can do a better job needs to look at the national debt! gross failure!

So we need "Private Government"?

Politicians are government operatives. They extract money from the rich and votes from the poor by promising to protect each from the other. Without government your are on your own, Good Luck!!!

failure

govenment always fails when it trys to compete with the private sector! government fails as it always throws money at the problem, where the private sector looks for solutions and the lowest cost of the project. lets look at ft smith and its 250 million dollar budget this year. our directors can't solve the problem, so they want to throw money at it! tax increases! how about more business, more sales, more jobs, more opportunity, the list goes on! they won't even allow you to speak, if you disagree with them! we need change, and we need it now!

bumper sticker funnies

bumper stickers from the great city of branson! it appears that they have a great sense of humor in big mo. #1---politicians & diapers need to be changed for the same reason. #2 i love my country its the government i'm afraid of!---#3--don't steal the government hates competition! made my day, hope it makes you laugh!

I have to call BS

All trash is fair game once it hits the curb. I have had the guys ask for stuff I put out for the trash, but I am not buying you watched them tear open your trash. I thank the good Lord he has given me more to do than monitor the trash man.

One mans trash...

One mans trash is another mans treasure. Who cares if the sanitation workers dig through the garbage left at the curb. It's GARBAGE and you don't want it anymore, that's why it's there! I too have seen my bag ripped open and dug through before it was put in the truck. Didn't bother me at all.

trash pickers

Correct - it is trash. The people who pick it up have no business going thru other peoples trash. My freind threw out checks from a bank that is no longer in business thinking no one would be able to use them since the bank has been closed for many years. They were removed from her garbage and over $1,.000.00 of bad checks passed.

Strange Discussion

If I put it out on the curb, I don't care who takes it as long as it is gone. Threw out bunch of old dog blankets last week, sure didn't notice any one going through the bags to get one those.
