Spin the Wheel

Spin the wheel. Around and around she goes and where she stops nobody knows. The govenment needs to stay out of the business world. Look what they have done with the the postal service, social secuity and the list goes on and on. Our local government as done just a great job with Convention Center over the last 10 years they really need to run a Ferris Wheel. According to the US Census the adverage median household income in Arkansas is $37,888.00. I know the people behind the Convention Center tax incomes are properly 3 times or greater and spending an extra $200.00 or $300.00 ayear wont affect them. I don't think we need another tax at this time  to run a failing Convention Center. The adverage taxpayer gives up 42% to 50% in their income in some form of taxes. When I look at all the taxes(real estate, personal property, sales taxes,$25.00 per monthcell phones taxes( state, local, federal taxes),taxes on new tires, tags for cars, state income taxes, federal income taxes, taxes on gasoline,ss taxes, medicare taxes, unemployement taxes, sin taxes, and the list goes on and on. I know 1% doesn't sound like much but when you add all the taxes it amounts to a lot. If I could see any good the Convention Center as done in the last 10 years it might make a differance.

Um...

The government doesn't run the Postal Service. The President appoints the Postmaster General, that's about it. They're not making any money because no one is sending mail anymore. Also, I make $11,000 less than the average median household, and I'm behind the Convention Center tax. You'd have to spend $20,000 on prepared food to get $200 a year in taxes on it. So...

Post Office

The United States Postal Service (also known as USPS, the Post Office or U.S. Mail) is an independent agency of the United States government responsible for providing postal service in the United States. It is one of the few government agencies explicitly authorized by the United States Constitution.Independent agencies of the United States federal government are those agencies that exist outside of the federal executive departments (those headed by a Cabinet secretary). More specifically, the term is used to describe agencies that, while constitutionally part of the executive branch, are independent of presidential control, usually because the president's power to dismiss the agency head or a member is limited.

So...

I don't quite understand your copying and pasting from Wikipedia: your selection of text doesn't seem to make a point. Or, if it does, it doesn't seem to back it up. Maybe...go back and try again?

My point

It was run by Federal Government until the Postal Reorganization Act was signed by President Richard Nixon on August 12, 1970. It replaced the cabinet-level Post Office Department with the independent Postal Service on July 1, 1971. Who do you think fund the shortfall of the Postal Service? Who do you think will fund the short fall of your Convention Center? I think if you are so strong on the Convention Center you should start taking private donations to fund the dead horse. NO more taxes for something that as not worked in 10 years and wont work until someone can run it that knows what they're doing.

Well...

"and wont work until someone can run it that knows what their doing." That would be the A&P Commission. They run successful convention centers all across the state. They'll take over when the prepared food tax passes. They'll be funded by tax dollars, so they'll be subject to the Freedom of Information Act, so you can check on them and hold them accountable. If you are successful in blocking the passage of the prepared food tax, the A&P Commission will not take over, and the Convention Center will stay open and in the hands of the City of Fort Smith, the very people who have done such a poor job in the past. Why would you want that?

Thomas

If this is the simple solution why hasn't this been done in 10 years? What happens if we give them 2 million dollars to run the Convention Center and nothing changes? Can we get a refund?

Well...

Vote for it and see.

Well-Thomas

I don't think I'll vote yes. I only bet on sure things and I don't this is a sure thing.

You don't think?

You don't sound too sure.
