When I'm worn out or worn down, I instinctively reach for chicken soup. it doesn't matter what's in it -- noodles, matzo balls, veggies - or plain, hot chicken broth -- it just makes me feel better. Something about the way it smells and feels instantly soothes me, and I feel my stress release and my muscles start to relax. What are your comfort foods of choice?
Yesterday I started asking, and to my surprise, everyone I asked had an instant answer. My seat mate on the airplane said it was tuna fish. I thought that was kind of weird one but he told me a story about how kids were tough on him when he was a little boy and how his mom's after school snack was almost always tuna fish. Nothing magical about the tuna fish -- it was just related to the safety and love he felt when he got home. The flight attendant said her's was hot dogs. I never got the story behind it but I can see that. Hot dogs bring up happy times in my mind too -- cookouts, ball games, walking on the street in New York....times with family and friends. The woman across the aisle said macaroni and cheese. Not the boxed variety (although I always think that's pretty great!), but the creamy homemade kind that her mom taught her to make when she was a kid. The guy at the Avis counter instantly said spaghetti and meatballs. There was a line behind me or I would have loved to get the story behind that one. His accent would have implied a different kind of comfort food for him.
Whatever it is, it's the kind of food that makes you remember happy times when you felt safe and loved. What are your comfort foods of choice? Do we have them at the deli? Our mission is to give you that same feeling that comes with those memories. Share yours with us.
Of course....there's always a giant bag of cheetohs to help you get through the day...
See you at The Deli!
