Maurine Slates

Maurine Slates, 98, passed away July 17, 2012.  She was born September 12, 1913 in Fort Smith to Bab Shelton and Vallie Mae (Pettus) Adair.  She was retired from the Fort Smith Public School System and was past president of Sparks Auxiliary.  Maurine was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was a past member of the administrative board, past president of the Gleaners Sunday School class, and was a past member of the church Alter Guild. In 2005 she received the “Mother of the Year” award from Mayor Ray Baker.
 
Memorial service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 20, 2012 in the First United Methodist Church Sanctuary, with private burial at Forest Park Cemetery.  Services are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. “Bill” Slates; two daughters, Susie Craig and Jane Hunter; two sisters, Myrthine Barry and Lucy Lee Adair; one brother, William C. Adair; and one grandson, Bill Craig.
She is survived by her son, Bill “Bebo” Slates and his wife Davie, of Fort Smith; five grandchildren, Debbie Sue Lange and her husband Paul, of Charlotte, NC, Randy Haynes of Charlotte, NC, John William Slates III and his wife Paige, of Dallas, TX, Leigh Koch and her husband Ben of Dallas, TX, and Cindy Veazey and her husband Andy of Senatobia, MS; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
 
Visitation will be Thursday, July 19, 2012 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Edwards Funeral Home.
