Forced City Sanitation Petition Falling Short

Only 800 signatures?  It is a sad situation when in our country, the private sector is forced out from competing in the market place and replaced with a uncompromising system of, “our way or the highway”, approach.  Is forced “ALL MANUAL” or “ALL AUTOMATED” really viable options? The once popular, free market approach, allowing competitive bidding from private companies must be unpopular locally.   Competitive bidding assures the citizens the best price and performance, something much needed in Fort Smith where the annual median household income is lower than any of the surrounding, comparable cities.   If a city like Jonesboro can provide trash pickup through its’ 8.5% sales tax without a charge to its’ residents, surely Fort Smith with a 9.25% sales tax, charging $13 plus tax for the same service could allow neighborhoods seeking 3rd party options some compromise?

Greenwood Mayor Accepts Market Approach In Trash

Greenwood's mayor, Del Gabbard allowed free market principles to work in Greenwood, benefiting the residents there. He decided on the actual low bidder in a lengthy "COMPETITIVE BIDDING" process to work. Fort Smith city administration sent out surveys several years ago and 70% of those surveys returned said they were satisfied with Altes Sanitation, Fort Smith administration still FORCED "city sanitation" onto the residents, disregarding the bidding process. Free markets or lack of free markets make a huge difference in a community over time. Congratulations to Mayor Del Gabbard for preserving and encouraging a strong, competitive private sector.
