Birdie L. Merriweather Mingo, 80, of Fort Smith entered into rest Friday, August 10, 2012 in a Fort Smith hospital. She was the widow of Nolan Mingo. She was born August 16, 1931 in Van Buren, Arkansas and was a popular and successful beautician for many years. She then went on to retire from Whirlpool Corporation. She enjoyed working several odd jobs after retirement, but especially enjoyed her years at Gerber through the Tech program for Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her parents LeAnna Dixon Thomas and Wallace Maddox; her daughter, Belinda J. Williams, and a grandson, John Woods III. She was an outstanding and loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.
She is survived by two daughters, Marlessia Woods and Birdie Lofton of Fort Smith; two sons, Arthur Lofton, Jr. (Antionette) and Harold Merriweather, Jr. (Vanessa); two sisters, Bessie Travis and JoAnne Triplett of Fort Smith; her grandchildren: Jerome Lofton, Brodie Cole, Lottie Lofton, Arthur Lofton III, Boo Lofton, Ibraheem Shabazz, Sharief Shabazz, Chivis Germany, Kristal Woods, Jermaine Jackson, and Sunquest Merriweather; several great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives.
Funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012 at First Church of God in Christ with Elder Everett Rainey officiating. Burial will be at Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary. Pallbearers will be her grandsons; honorary pallbearers will be John Woods II and Milo Travis.
The family will receive visitors and friends at 801 North "K" Street.
