Spearman Earns JLFS Star Award

The Junior League of Fort Smith gave out their monthly Star Award during the first general meeting of the year at the Movie Lounge in Fort Smith Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Beashua Spearman, who has been a league member for three years and currently serves at the Co-Chair of Literacy, earned the Star Award for “getting out of her comfort zone,” according to Teresa Jones, Membership Vice President.

Jones presented Spearman with the award Wednesday night as more than 100 junior league members gathered to learn about the year’s focus, aging out of foster care, and listen to motivational speaker Vicki Clark discuss balancing volunteering with daily life.

Balancing duties as a junior league member and a personal life is something Spearman knows all about.

She spent the summer months going above and beyond her placement on the Literacy committee, which works to promote reading among children and young adults, as well as educational services to English as a Second Language (ESL) students.

She made notes and voiced her opinion regarding possible enhancements to her placement on the committee, according to Jones.

Spearman also attended the All Arkansas Conference of Junior Leagues in Pine Bluff and was eager to share what she had learned.

“She typed up all her notes and sent them to the other attendees that were not in her sessions,” Jones said.

Spearman, an Oklahoma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, also made significant contributions to the Junior League of Fort Smith’s website and public relations committees by recruiting two of her college professors to review the new website and writing articles with photos on activities League members had attended during the summer.

While settling into her placement for the year Spearman also spent time traveling to Little Rock in support her family while her father battled cancer.

Spearman is the wife of Jason Spearman, a police officer in LeFlore County, Oklahoma.

“Beashua is my wife, best friend, and partner in life,” Jason said. “But, most of all the biggest inspiration in my life.  Always goes above and beyond any task she undertakes, and is an inspiration to everyone she helps.”
