Conv Center, A&P, Wichita Falls & Softball Questions

Why does Mayor Sanders allow tax dollars from the hardworking taxpayers of Fort Smith to be used to subsidize huge salary packages at the A&P and the convention center when performance is so low?  Why do city directors ask softball questions pertaining to this performance?  Wichital Falls, TX has a smaller MSA than Fort Smith, but their Multi-Center Complex produces approximately 6 TIMES the REVENUE our convention center does.  Their Hotel Tax is over TWICE what our A&P receives in Hotel Tax and they're located in a smaller MSA.  Both, our convention center and the A&P are heavily subsidized by hardworking taxpayers, this doesn't happen in Wichita Falls.  In Fort Smith, the salary packages alone exceed ANNUAL REVENUE.  Last year, the convention center generated $651,157 in TOTAL REVENUE.  Salary packages alone were $798,000.  Salary packages were $146,843 more than TOTAL REVENUE.   TOTAL EXPENSES were approximately $1,507,000, for a total LOSS of $855,000.  If the convention center and the A&P can't be scaled down, then maybe the city should find someone like a Lance Beaty, who can lease the place for a $1, give him the Hotel Tax and let's see real economic impact numbers, not the pipe dreams we've been given and let's move on.  Mayor Sanders, there are much better ways to spend $855,000 of taxpayers money.

Money

Jack, why do you question the need to cut millions from public safety to subsidize the CC? You and I have been told that $855,000 loss is actually $34million brought into our community through taxes. If we only tripled the losses, we would have nearly $100million in money brought into the city - right? With all that money, we can take more from public safety and build another CC, because we all know we don't need to fund police.

The Key

If you spend enough of other peoples money, it is possible to buy enough supporters and votes to get re-elected even if there are a few bumps along the road to polluted neighborhoods.

Blind Leading The Blind

Didn't this same individual work at Whirlpool for about 30 years in charge of safety and claim that he never was aware of the health problems from contamination to workers and the entire neighborhood homes around Whirlpool? It could be that he has trouble with his eyes and his hearing and just assumes that all is well around the work place and the neighborhood.

Just Wait Jack...

Just wait until the water park needs an infusion of cash from the general fund to operate. That will come in 7-10years after all of the hoop-la and grand opening is done. Just wait Fort Smith, more is coming, and they will want more from your wallet as well.

So, Jack, when you running for council

I keep waiting to see your platform and your announcement of you getting on the board to fix everything.

Jack, if you have such a

Jack, if you have such a problem with Fort Smith then why don't you run for a seat on the BOD? Then maybe we can have some real solutions instead of empty rhetoric.

BOD

The deck is stacked on the BOD with 4 City Spending followers and 3 others who continually get their opinions voted down. Jack is smart enough to keep his distance and just use comments and real numbers to identify the problems and try to make the public aware. The City Wire is doing a great community service by allowing people from both sides of the issue to speak their minds. Good journalism always explores both sides of the issues so many thanks to The City Wire for giving people a true voice in their city.

Good Journalism?

TCW is partially owned by the establishment in Fort Smith. The "good old boys" realize that the best way to handle dissidents is to provide a virtual relief online. A venue for freedom of speech outside of a televised BOD meeting is nothing more than a controlled boil to let off steam. The cronies will still do whatever they please. I only wish the TCW in its present "relatively balanced" form existed before I relocated to Fort Smith. All I had for due diligence was hearsay, the Times Record and my own optimist bias to get in on the ground floor in a town where the only way to go was up..."was" was then, further down is now. Indoor bullfighting and Hooters cowgirl mud wrestling at the CC might be something to try....nothing else seems to be working anyway !! Olay and Yippie Ky Yay !!

Exactly

Your comment contradicts itself. If the board is stacked 4 to 3 against Jack & his loyal band of followers, all Jack has to do is get elected. He would unseat one of his board nemesis and the board will now be stacked 4 to 3 in favor of Jack and his loyal band of followers. Rhetoric without action is nothing more than empty rhetoric. Jack's desire to take pot shots from the back door, with one foot out the door, clearly shows his lack of commitment to what he preaches. If he was fully committed to his words, then he would act on them by running for city council and cleaning up the what he calls a mess. Remember, if he gets elected the power on the board of directors per your own comment would now be in Jack's favor and he can accomplish his vision for the city. In the meantime, it is simply empty rhetoric.

Cheap Shots

It seems to me that the "InterestedCPA" is taking cheap "pot Shots" at Jack for his comments that differ from the group where he or she appears to be a "follower!" When they call free speech "empty rhetoric" it seems to me that they don't believe in our right to free speech and our right to vote on a new tax.

Not Quite

I never told Jack to be quiet or that he did not have a right to his speech. I am merely pointing out that incessant complaining without action is simply rhetoric. If any of us had an employee that complained about how wrong everything in our business was but never lifted a finger to help correct any of the things he complained about, we all, including you PAC and Proud, would fire that employee in a heartbeat. If Jack were truly interested in the betterment of Fort Smith he would position himself to be an agent for change. Instead, he merely comes across as the boy who cries wolf all the time. Based on your comment, surely you agree that I, like Jack, am entitled to my right of free speech.

Double talking CPA

It was clearly pointed out to all readers on the City Wire that Fort Smith Taxpayers are spending about 900,000 dollars per year to run just the Mayor's office and the City Administrators office. If someone believes taxpayer money is being wasted, it is their civic duty and responsibility to point out what they think can be changed to provide the taxpayers with a better bang for their buck. Jack is pointing out problems that he sees and is posting real numbers to back up his statements but you "InterestedCPA" are just attacking Jack for doing his civic duty to help steer government in the right direction. Your comment is telling Jack that he should forget the 900,000 dollars plus that the taxpayers are paying for inefficient government and go do the job himself? It certainly looks like you are the one doing the "incessant complaining" and boldly attacking a private citizen for just doing their civic duty. The city manager forgot to collect over 250,000 dollars of taxpayer money from Van Buren for water and I guess you expect Jack to collect the tab because our 900,000 dollar plus city managers lack responsibility and accountability? Yes, you are entitled to free speech but lets not forget that some of these same City Leaders frown on free speech! Subpoena anyone?

Simple Rhetoric CPA BS

The "interestedCPA" is at it again with BS! He is telling Jack if he doesn't like the way things are in Fort Smith to run for office and try to change the unchangeable! People have tried before and were harassed, threatened, subpoenaed, attacked, and labeled as a trouble maker! Don't even think about disagreeing with City Hall because if you dare, life for you will NOT be worth living in Fort Smith because the insiders will gang up on you and make your life "hell On The Border". One must wonder if CPA is a code word for Crony Pack Attacker who has a defined mission to keep the taxpayer money flowing his direction and ridicule any person who has the real desire to move Fort Smith in a positive direction. The inner crony circle rules the roost and if you want in, you just quietly follow along and just maybe they will let you have a piece of the pie because you could get a loan of taxpayer money that you will never be required to pay back!

Simple See Pee Aay

If simply tipping the balance on the BOD was enough to countervail the elite in this town then Fort Smith wouldn't be the fiasco it is. With such simplistic rationale, I-CPA had better stick to filing 1040 EZ for his clients. Any filing more complex than that will get his clients audited by the Infernal Revenooers.

Stacked

Agree that the deck is stacked and no single person on the BOD could change anything so the house always wins.

Be Careful Jack

Some editor may boldly call you a "red Herring" for trying to do the right thing! Saving taxpayer money and moving Fort Smith ahead is secondary to uncontrolled SPENDING!
