The Central Business Improvement District was established in the late 70's. Due to the mass exiting of commercial businesses to urban sprawl to mall locations, so many properties within the urban core of Downtown Fort Smith, like so many other Downtown's accross the country were left to deteriorate. BID's or CBID's were introduced to be a driving force to encourage the redevelopment of Downtown's. At one time vacant properties were the majority in Downtown Fort Smith. Due to a steady growth pattern which has been in place since the tornado in the late 90's much progress has been made within the boundaries of the CBID. There is a tremendous amount of work still to be accomplished, however a consistant amount of private and public improvements are made each year.
