The Legendary Bass Reeves to be Commemorated in Bronze

The Times Record's Jeff Arnold did a great job this weekend with the latest on the Bass Reeves Legacy Monument.

A larger-than-life monument is probably
fitting for a man whose legendary exploits made him maybe the most
feared lawman in the Indian Territory.

A 1¼ scale bronze
monument of U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves on horseback to be created by
Oklahoma artist Harold Holden will be placed in Ross Pendegraft Park at
the foot of the J. Fred Patton/Garrison Avenue Bridge when it is
complete.

The Bass Reeves Legacy Initiative — a local nonprofit
created to support projects commemorating the frontier lawman — will
use private donations to fund the $300,000 monument, which is estimated
to be complete May 25, 2009.

Read more about Bass Reeves and the monument here, in Jeff's story.
