Einstein's God

Since the unveiling of this letter, atheists, agnostics and the like have been in glee - their most favorite scientist of all time was finally "outed" as the atheist he was. The religious fanatics can no longer use Einstein as one of the faithful.

To take this letter and hold it up as proof that Einstein did not believe in God is to oversimplify the issue. To Einstein, what God IS was simply defined differently by him. To Einstein, God is all that is known in the universe and all that is unknown - a combination of omnipotent knowledge of everything - energy, light, time, particles, and perhaps other dimensions. Does that sound like a god?

What is God to you?

i grok that, and perhaps

i grok that, and perhaps this recognition is a conscious step in self-realization for such a 'god.' however, there is a very distinct semantic difference between a personal god and the recognition of an all encompassing god of which we are a part (a very small, very relative part, to induce einstein into grave rolling). einstein was very much a believer in the observably mechanical functionality of the universe (and familiarity with his viewpoints will often yield an almost religious dedication to a deterministic standpoint).

stating that einstein believed in god because he was smart enough to wrangle the definition into a format that he could understand is like stating fans of fairy tales believe in mythical creatures because they cite trolls and billy goats as representative of greed and courage. the poor quality of that analogy is brought to you by the difficulty of even attempting to possibly describe the way einstein's brain may have potentially worked, as ignorant as i am.

Very Well Put

For be it from me to assume Einsteins thoughts, but it seems that compartmentalizing God is what has been going on for centuries. I almost think that the moron, imbecile, christian, jew, catholic, buddist, muslim, hindu, and whatever-the-hell-else-there-is religion also do the same thing. The mysteries of everything we don't know is in a box, and it is all about figuring out the secret of the box. Maybe the Bible, cosmology, particle physics, or astrology is the secret of the box, but at the end of the day, god is compartmentalized by uncommon mammals of evolution on a small rock of 100s of billions of rocks and water circling 100s of millions of nuclear-powered heat and light machines in the middle of an average galaxy amongst 100s of billions of galaxies in a universe the size of which even an uncommonly evolved mammal can fail to comprehend.
